The EU is a top destination for both international visitors and its residents. In 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic, the EU tourism ecosystem represented 12.9 % of EU Gross Value Added and 15.8% of employment. However, the COVID-19 pandemic had a particularly devastating effect on the tourism ecosystem and has led to significant losses of income and jobs across Europe: around 11 million jobs in the EU tourism sector were affected by the pandemic in 2020.

The relationship between tourism and Culture it is the actual origins of the tourism phenomenon. Cultural awareness is essential to understand the cultural and linguistic diversity in Europe. Understanding of one’s own culture and a sense of identity can be the basis for an open attitude towards and respect for diversity of cultural expression. Tourism brings individuals and human communities into contact, and through them cultures and civilizations, has an important role to play in facilitating dialogue among cultures.
